(Answer) (Category) OpenLDAP Faq-O-Matic : (Category) OpenLDAP Software FAQ : (Category) Configuration : (Category) SLAPD Configuration : (Category) Overlays : (Answer) Proxy caching: the "pcache" overlay (OpenLDAP 2.2)
The pcache overlay provides proxy caching capability to the underlying database.

Further documentation can be found in The OpenLDAP Proxy Cache by Apurva Kumar. This document refers to the initial implementation of the proxy cache feature, which was tied to proxying the meta backend using the ldbm backend as local storage. It has been rewritten into an overlay by Howard Chu, but the above document still reflects the rationale that drove the implementation.

The pcache overlay supports run-time configuration within the back-config framework.
