"nentries" means "Number of entries" that were returned from the query
that was executed. So syncrepl does a query that asks, "How many new
entries are there that I need to replicate?". If the answer is ZERO
then there are no new entries to replicate.

If syncrepl executes and does replication, any ldapsearch that was
identical and done after that point had better well return zero.

Is there a way to do an ldapsearch that will ask "How many new entries
are there that I need to replicate?"

That is what syncrepl is already doing. Clearly if it is working, then no ldapsearch is going to match it, since syncrepl will have already completed. But note that syncrepl works entirely off the contextCSN. If you know the old CSN, you can use it to get the same result.
