No, the make.conf is used on build time, not only for a buildworld but also for applications you build. So you can just go into your OpenLDAP port and do a make in there.
Didn't know that ;) However, the problem isn't in the make. It's in the configure :(
It's not because my nick is FRLinux that my only experience is in Linux, the line i gave you applies to FreeBSD.
