how does it work?

Hi!

I've administrated a Windows 2000 Active Directory for a view month.
Now I've changed to another company which wants to use a
linux - based - directoryservice.  
I've read something about openldap. Now I have a question:


If I want to use an openldap - server only for collecting some data -
such as username, computername, etc 
- have the users to logon to the server every time they login into their 
system?
