Problems with an LDAP server

I've got a problem with a new LDAP server and it's driving me nuts. I
started with the UMich version and then OpenLDAP. The problem occurs on
both versions. Here's what's happening: I've got two LDAP servers running
on one machine, one on port 389 and the other on port 390. The 390 server
returns results just fine; with or without the 389 server running. The 389
server always returns "no matches". With the debugging set to 255, I can
see results (if I search for "Suppona", "cn=Roger Suppona" appears in
debug's output. If I search for "Smith", I see lots and lots of Smiths
scroll by.) but the return is always "no matches". This happens even if the
390 server is turned off. I've used both gdbm and Sleepycat backends with
the same result.

Here's the vitals:

OpenLDAP Release 1.0.3
gdbm 1.7.3
RedHat Linux 5.1
HP Netserver LM/100 with 128mb of memory and 2.5GB of storage

Has anyone seen anything like this and is there a cure?
