Makes sense. As it turns out, it looks like the system is network I/O bound
anyway.
I started using this fnccheck profiler instead of gprof.

It shows that the majority of clock time goes to socket I/O and select()...
Although
the malloc time is noticable, it is still tiny overall. (Of course, fnccheck
itself
is a bit buggy and I'm not sure how reliable its data is...)
