Changing this to (by adding dc=fakesuffix to the uri):
database	meta
suffix "dc=isp1,dc=co,dc=za,dc=fakesuffix"
uri ldap://localhost/dc=isp1,dc=co,dc=za,dc=fakesuffix
lastmod off
suffixmassage "dc=isp1,dc=co,dc=za,dc=fakesuffix" "dc=isp1,dc=co,dc=za"

made it work.

I would still be able to use rwm instead though ... haven't got a working
configuration for that ... but I'll go home now.
