Hmmm... that is strange. I distinctly remember seeing a message to that effect coming from an ldap initscript... although it was probably many versions ago. Anyway the point is moot. The specific problem with my backup was that the compression I used did not save the perms/ownership. ~ I thought I had gotten the perms correct for all the files that mattered but I was clearly mistaken. There's always one you miss, right? In the mean time, I'll have to consider adjusting my backup plan.
