I had posted a message saying that a

ldapsearch -W -D "uid=root,ou=People,dc=blah" :

gives me a sasl ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: No such object
error.

Thanks to Turbo Fredriksson for the advice of using '-x' also - that worked.
