Not sure it should be so implicit (just food for thoughts):
back-ldap could become an overlay; then back-relay would
be the hook to invoke it:

database        relay
suffix          "dc=example,dc=com"
overlay         rewrite-remap
suffixmassage   "dc=example,dc=com" "o=Example,c=US"
overlay         ldap
uri             <uri>
