yes, i seem to be in the trap about the mirror mode misnomer. though ambiguous, your statements indicate that mirror mode the setting is required for n-way multi master replication.That is what the Admin Guide already says.
And that is a proveably false statement and needs to be rectified. There is zero requirement to put a load balancer in front of an MMR setup.
