Actually, this part is correct according to docs.  What you see is a clumsy effort to not disclose the actual dn on this list.  Sorry about that.  This section of the ldif file is this (I replaced my actual dn with dc=example,dc=com in my posted examples):
dn: dc=db,dc=scbbs,dc=com
objectclass: dcObject
objectclass: organization
o: TFG Database
dc: db
This is the same ldif I used successfully when I originally created the database in the older version of openldap.

I appreciate the time and effort put into documentation.  I have read the quickstart and many other docs.  Sorry to be a bother, but can't get a grip on what these errors might be. 
    <= entry_decode: str2ad(n): AttributeDescription contains
inappropriate characters
