Hm...

I did a search on my 2.2.15 server (LDAPv3 ldapsearch) with 
"(|(mail=*)(cn=*)(sn=*))" as the filter, and it logged appropriately, so 
I'm not sure what the issue is around how mozilla is doing the search.
