For best performance you need to index what is being used as search
keys.  You can either figure that out by harassing the people who wrote
the applications doing the searching, or by examining your logs
(assuming you have slapd write them) for what is being searched on.

It is my opinion, that you would do well to get a starting point from
the application developers, but realize they are going to lie to you and
examine your logs to fine tune your indexes.
