Sorry, Ace, I have to disagree. This is a build environment issue, and has nothing to do with OpenLDAP in and of itself. My 2.2.x binaries build with BDB as a shared library without problem.

/usr/local/lib# ldd slapd
       libldap_r.so.201 =>      /usr/local/lib/libldap_r.so.201
       liblber.so.201 =>        /usr/local/lib/liblber.so.201
       libdb-4.2.so =>  /usr/local/lib/libdb-4.2.so
       libsasl2.so.2 =>         /usr/local/lib/libsasl2.so.2
       libdl.so.1 =>    /usr/lib/libdl.so.1
       libssl.so.0.9.7 =>       /usr/local/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7
       libcrypto.so.0.9.7 =>    /usr/local/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7
       libresolv.so.2 =>        /usr/lib/libresolv.so.2
       libgen.so.1 =>   /usr/lib/libgen.so.1
       libnsl.so.1 =>   /usr/lib/libnsl.so.1
