Thanks Frank.  What do you think is my better bet if I still want the RedHat
startup scripts and GUI based server starting/stopping tools to work?

Can you recommend a distribution which would give me fewer problems?

Ah, the joy's of RedHat!

Go grab the redhat source rpm and modify it to build with berkeley db,
or build your own.  There's no way to get it to work with bdb now
because redhat forced it to gdbm when they built it.
