configure option for linking slapd statically?

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a configure option for linking slapd as a
static executable.  I have tried:

  > env CC=gcc3 LDFLAGS='-static' ./configure

But, the -static gets stripped when slapd is linked.  BTW I am attempting
this using RH 7.2 and gcc3.
