The documentation for back-sql is still located in its subdirectory
(servers/slapd/back-sql/docs)

in short - yes. see FAQs and maillist archives for more answers - there
are plenty.

In general, any ODBC-accessible server will go. It is reported to work
with Oracle, MS SQL Server, Postgres, mySQL (readonly), Teradata...
