openldap and freebsd

I'm running FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE and I'm having a bit of a problem with
openldap.  I installed the port version 1.2.11_1.  Everything is working to
spec, except if I reboot the box all the db files in /var/run/openldap-ldbm
get blown away.  I have a feeling that it has something to do with the
rc.shutdown script and its calling of the /usr/local/etc/rc.d/slapd.sh
script so this mailing list might not be the place to ask this question.
I've also posted this to freebsd-questions, so hopefully someone else will
have encountered this problem before.
