After fixing all the problems in the import file that show up running it through ldapadd, all is well. It turned out the ACL was the only part of my configuration that was _not_ wrong! Thanks again.

Quoting in DNs (including the "\" character) should be avoid.  They'll
cause you nothing but headaches.

I've managed to convince my boss we can do without the "Inc." and will stay that way. :-)
