Regarding: "In essence, I'm attempting to retrieve the DN of those 'local1' objects which have children entries." I don't know what is implemented in openldap, but there is (or has been proposed) an X.500 operational attribute that might be useful for such queries. The attribute is "hasSubordinates", and its value is boolean.
