I use stow, so I use ./configure --prefix=openldap`date +%Y%m%d`.
So I've the following links.

/usr/local/etc/openldap -> ../stow/openldap20000726/etc/openldap
/usr/local/libexec -> ../stow/openldap20000726/libexec

/usr/local/lib/libldap.a -> ../stow/openldap20000726/lib/libldap.a
...
...
