Even reverting to revision 1.682 of the configure script, with the typo from 
configure.in 1.644, I can't reproduce that error.

Perhaps you should try deleting your source tree and fetching it again. You 
could list your full configure command here, with all relevant environment 
variable settings. But it seems you have a corrupted configure script.
