2.1.23 on Solaris 8 segfault

Installing openldap from source on Solaris 8, I've hit a major problem
trying to get the slapd process to run.

BerkelyDB is compiled and installed without errors from 4.2.50 source
Openldap is configured compiled, linked and installed from 2.1.23 source

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/ssl/lib
PATH=/usr/ccs/bin:$PATH

./configure --enable-debug --enable-ldbm --enable-bdb
make depend ; make ; make install

slapd linking:

        libdb-4.2.so =>  /usr/local/lib/libdb-4.2.so
        libssl.so.0.9.7 =>       /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7
        libresolv.so.2 =>        /usr/lib/libresolv.so.2
        libgen.so.1 =>   /usr/lib/libgen.so.1
        libnsl.so.1 =>   /usr/lib/libnsl.so.1
        libsocket.so.1 =>        /usr/lib/libsocket.so.1
        libc.so.1 =>     /usr/lib/libc.so.1
        libdl.so.1 =>    /usr/lib/libdl.so.1
        libgcc_s.so.1 =>         /usr/local/lib/libgcc_s.so.1
        libcrypto.so.0.9.7 =>    /usr/local/ssl/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7
        libmp.so.2 =>    /usr/lib/libmp.so.2
        /usr/platform/SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise/lib/libc_psr.so.1

All compiles, links and installs ok (with either the Sun linker/archiver
as above PATH, or with GNU tools). However, when it comes to starting
the slapd process, I immediately get a segfault:

#:/usr/local/src/openldap-2.1.23/servers/slapd > ./slapd
Segmentation Fault (core dumped)

I have also attached the more detailed output of running slapd -d 1
(debug.txt). Running the server process from gdb gives no clues, in
addition to the same debug.txt output, other than the following very
last line:

#:/usr/local/src/openldap-2.1.23/servers/slapd > gdb slapd

(gdb) run -d 1
...
<Lots of output, same as debug.txt>
...
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0xff032b7c in strcmp () from /usr/lib/libc.so.1
(gdb)

Is anyone else having a problem running this version of openldap on
Solaris 8?

Cheers
