Section 5.3.1 of the OpenLDAP 2.0 Administrators Guide has a side-note:

An example normalized DN is "cn=Babs Jensen,dc=example,dc=com". An example of a
non-normalized DN is "cn=Babs Jensen,dc=example,dc=com"

But: cn=Babs Jensen,dc=example,dc=com
     cn=Babs Jensen,dc=example,dc=com

The listed DNs are the same.
