RE: Beginning taxonomy for finding LDAP servers.

Sorry David.. - Its one of those words that I picked up on the convict
ship on the way out to Aussie - so I had a nasty feeling that it did not
end up in the "Luggable" version of the OED - However, it could be in
the Chain Gang version .. :-)

I think its convict "slang" , a cross between Hydraulic - the
conveyance of liquid through pipes - esp motive power ... and Hand -
apendage on the end of the arm (which is included).
In the old context it was used for getting people to row big boats.
There was a common line on board - " Come on you miserable lot , eat
that gruel and get those handraulics going on the oars - otherwise,
fair dinkum, its 10 lashes.. mate" :-)

But in the modern context words concatenated with "configuration" =
Hand or Hands - powered by fluid (blood) on key board ... to configure
everything, everywhere... ie The more non distributed LDAP sever
technology one installs, the more hands one needs to configure it and
replicate everything to everywhere...

I thought the goal of technology is to simplify things for humans. Non
distributed LDAP servers - compared to X.500 directory systems dont do
that. So having a taxonomy of where non distributed LDAP servers are,
just strikes me as a lot of pointless human effort and a symptom of LDAP
not being able to deal with system distribution issues like chaining,
knowledge and mutual authentication onto common access control regimes -
that X.500 provides.

Glad to be of service (and apologies for causing a lugging session)

regards alan
PS out of curiosity - why couldnt you open the OED where it was and save
the lugging. :-)
