A small anecdote about application-specific directory protocols:
When I was in Greece many years ago (and I don't know if this is still the case), vehicle licence plates were alphanumeric using Greek capital letters -- but only those Greek capital letters which are identical to Latin capital letters. This seems like an appropriate protocol for licence plates, but would not be generally applicable.
