In RFC 2251, section 4.5.3, it says:
"The name of an unexplored subtree in a SearchResultReference need not be
subordinate to the base object." 

I suspect this has something to do with the server having knowledge of
indexing information, but I'm not sure. Can/should this sentence be
clarified?
