The compare operation in RFC 2251 (section 4.10) simply states: "Upon receipt of a Compare Request, a server will attempt to perform the requested comparison. The result of the comparison will be returned to the client in the Compare Response".

It doesn't instruct the implementor on how to handle invalid and/or attributes that don't exist, or what to do when there is no equality matching rule. Should these things be discussed here, or left for the (hopefully) upcomming result codes appendix?
