Cygwin with MinGW OpenLDAP Compilation

Does anyone know of a good set of guidelines on getting building OpenLDAP
and related libraries (SASL most specifically) compiled under Cygwin with
MinGW? I've read the FAQ on the OpenLDAP website regarding how to setup
Cygwin with MinGW to compile native windows binaries, but I've been having a
really difficult time getting things setup right. For those that haven't
read it, you can find it here:
http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/301.html

The FAQ was written some time ago, and the patch mentioned in the section
"Fixing MinGW Support" no longer seems necessary after taking a look at the
cygwin specs file. I've followed all the steps in that FAQ that seem to
still to the current state of the Cygwin and MinGW environment, even though
the FAQ is quite old. Yet, I think I am still missing something. Do I need
to use a combination of Cygwin and a full MinGW installation or is it
possible to do a build with just Cygwin plus the MinGW modules offered
during the Cygwin installation, etc?

I'm hoping there is some up to date tutorial out there that can shed some
light on how to get everything working. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason
