It's possible; we do something like that.

You will need a directive to hook them all together on the master,
though.

Something like:

suffix	dc=example1,dc=example,dc=com
replica	host=slave1
...

suffix	"dc=example,dc=com"

Note how the final suffix subsumes the previous ones.
