Thanks for the help folks, I found out the problem and it had nothing to
do with LDAP or Berkeley: RedHat 7.1 had an OpenLDAP version already
installed in /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, etc...and that's what was starting up
by default.  All the compiles I did were fine. :p

Oh well, chalk it up to a learning experience.
