Try " ldapsearch -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -b 'cn=Total,cn=Connections,cn=monitor' -s sub '(objectClass=*)'  monitorCounter". I got:
# Total, Connections, Monitor
dn: cn=Total,cn=Connections,cn=Monitor
monitorCounter: 70315
