OK, that's what I was missing: ldap_initialize instead of ldap_init;

[In my defence, my Linux distro (Debian Sarge) ships with libldap2-dev
version 2.1.30 and, although ldap_initialize exists in that version, it
doesn't appear to be documented ... I've found the man page for
ldap_initialize from the openldap 2.4.x alpha branch.]
