When uses proxycache or replicas ?

Hi,

All services (mail, web, ...) need directory, so the ldap service must high available. To have this, I can use a master and some replicas (with a Linux virtual server) or I can use some proxycache ? Maybe a proxycache can be used espcially for a specific service (eg. mail) with the filters required by this service as proxytemplate.

What are the differences beetween these two solutions ? When I have to use one and not the other ? Which solution offers more high availability ?
