does anyone know what is happening here and a way to fix it?

The Ldap version is OpenLdap 2.2.11, Samba 3.0.4, DB 4.2.52 and running
on FreeBSD 5.2.1

Did you compile OpenLDAP against kerberos 5 libraries and cyrus-sasl? It won't have GSSAPI support without those. You also don't list what version of OpenSSL you compiled against...
