OpenLDAP and IPv6

Is anyone using this on IPv6 successfully? Not that I want to, but by
default the configuration (for FreeBSD anyway) is --enable-ipv6, which has
always caused trouble for me (both 2.0.X and 2.1.X).

In a nutshell, if /etc/hosts contains:

  ::1       localhost localhost.my.domain
  127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.my.domain

then although SLAPD binds to both V4 and V6, the LDAPSEARCH client only
ever tries ::1, and the connection is immediately closed by the server.
Commenting out ::1 (or swapping the lines around) makes it work.

So, before I open a ticket on this, does IPv6 actually work here?
