tilde in value

Hi

I have an openldap-2.0.15 client build that I am using against a Netscape
Directory Server 3.12. All is well except one strange effect:

When using ldapsearch to get an entry in which some values contain a tilde
charachter (~), that value comes back as a garbled string.

When using the ldap client API from a C program, the values with tilde's
in them have an unprintable charachter (\304\240) instead of the tilde.

None of these problems are observed when using the netscape's ldapsearch.

Can you provide any insight as to why this may be happening?

Environment:
Netscape Directory Server 3.12 with a UMich Kerberos 4 plugin
Client:
openldap-2.0.15
cyrus-sasl-1.5.24
openssl-0.9.6b

OS:
Sparc Solaris 8

thanks
-anton
