RE: RFC 2251 Root DSE non-standard

The key argument for not returning operations attributes unless
requested is noted in 4.5.1:
     Furthermore, servers will not return operational attributes, such 
     as objectClasses or attributeTypes, unless they are listed by name,
     since there may be extremely large number of values for certain
     operational attributes.

Not to mention that some with very large values (such as certificates).

Of course, client implementors are free to request both + and *.
