 I use IMP (http://www.horde.org), which seems to like "mail", structured
as so:

 $ ldapsearch -h ldap  -b "ou=people,o=online.ie,dc=fv,dc=digiserve,dc=ie" uid=jplooney

uid=jplooney,ou=People,o=online.ie,dc=fv,dc=digiserve,dc=ie
uid=jplooney
cn=John P. Looney
objectclass=account
objectclass=posixAccount
objectclass=top
objectclass=shadowAccount
shadowlastchange=10905
shadowmax=99999
shadowwarning=7
shadowflag=134550068
uidnumber=518
gidnumber=520
homedirectory=/home/jplooney
gecos=John P. Looney
mail=jplooney@online.ie
role=staff
extension=xxxx
pgpkeyid=BAB730E7
