Storing XML as an attribute value, how to disable BASE64 encoding ?

I'm trying to load a chunk of XML into an attribute value.  The XML starts 
with the "<" character.  ldapadd sees the "<" and BASE64 encodes the 
XML.  Can the "<" be escaped to avoid the BASE64 encoding ?

Otherwise, how can I load a chunk of XML into an attribute value via LDIF 
without the wonderful BASE64 encoding ?
