Netscape DSGW CGI programs - problems?

I am trying to get Netscpape Directory Server 4.12 running,
specifically the DSGW part, on Linux.

The problem I am having is that the CGI programs won't work.
Every time I try to run one I get what looks like line noise
all over the screen :-(

I expect that I've got something misconfigured - has anyone met
this before?

The other explanation is that the release notes say that the systems
requirements are RedHat 6.0, kernel 2.2.5 with glibc2.1.1.
I'm running a stock RH 6.2, with kernel 2.2.12 and glibc 2.1.2
Are the system calls really THAT different between 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 
that these CGIs won't work?
Please, someone tell me that I won't have to run up an old Linux
system...
