Directory database design

Hi,

   Could someone point me to an online web resource on designing and
implementing a directory database? I've already read the examples from
the "Database creation and maintenance tools" document at openldap.org
but it does not explain the architecture/structure of the database and
what their dc, cn, objectClass, etc serve for. 
   By the way, the entries on a directory will depend on the applications 
that will access it? I mean, if I want to install a SMTP service (sendmail
for example) should I look what entry names (on the directory) sendmail
will look for?
