Scaling Directory servers

Hi,

All LDAP documentation available, talks about using referrals and
multiple tree definitions on individual systems.. however how about a
problem, where a single server is unable to scale.. take the example of
yahoo having 50 mil subscribers.. having all these entries in a single
ldap tree for the purpose of receiving mail, probably wont fit a single
box...

can i have a primary ldap server split across 2 boxes, and replication
carried on as updates between them.. in this case, we'll have to define
each ldap server as a master and slave of each other.. this will also
result in a looping architecture causing problems...

the second issue is using secondary ldap servers at a remote location..
in this case we want to have a secondary ldap replicating to another
secondary server, is it possible?
