What is the SSL/TLS status?

I have read in the mail list that:

 

a)                   SSL in OpenLDAP is deprecated.

b)                   Version 2 will support SSL/TLS.

 

I also read in the FAQ that SSL/TLS is support in version 1.2 and that all you need to do is use the "--with-tls" switch when configuring OpenLDAP.  However, I have version 1.2.7 and I cannot find the "--with-tls" switch in the configuration.  Therefore:

 

a)                   What is the status of OpenLDAP and SSL/TLS?

b)                   How can one run OpenLDAP with SSL/TLS?

c)                   Is there something better on the near horizon and what is it?
