select fails in back-meta?

I wonder why all of a sudden (I haven't been testing it 
for a while) back-meta does not work on my old dear RH6.2
(that's where I developed it!) while it works on more 
recent releases (RH7.1/7.2).  Apparently the select() in
ldap_result() fails, while the one invoked by back-ldap has 
no problems.  The differences between the two codes in this
part are really minimal.  Did anybody experience anything 
like this?  Anybody tested it on different architectures? 
Any clues?
