I've also been working on a UM derived LDAP V3 server.  I removed the
original ldap and lber and used the Netscape SDK instead.  The changes
needed weren't significant and I've got an V3 client library with
minimal effort on my part.  With the license issues sorted out you would
be a lot further with a V3 implementation - as you say, there is no
point in duplicating effort.
