OpenLDAP 2.3 has been unsupported for years.  I suggest you use a current, 
supported version of OpenLDAP.  Also, the ITS system is for reporting bugs, 
not asking questions about how to do things.  Your question would best be 
directed to openldap-technical@openldap.org once you're running something 
supported.  I would note the LTB project has OpenLDAP 2.4 RPMs available 
for RHEL5.
