force creation of a "glue" node in the database?

Using 2.4.16 on RedHat Linux.  Does anyone know of a way to force the creation of a “glue” node in ldap?

Here is the scenario:

For some (as yet unknown) reason, our database sometimes has “glue” nodes.  I’m suspecting this relates to syncrepl, but have not been able to diagnose the problem yet.  I’m working on adding the manageDSAit control to our server requests (using the c client interface).  I’d like a way to test this automatically.  One way to do that would be to have the test program create a “glue” node and see that it can be found by the client code.

I can’t find a way to get the glue node created; I’m always getting a error 65 invalid structural object class chain.
