This means that configure thinks you have a libc5 system. Something is
probably seriously broken to give it that impression, since the chances of
you really having a libc5 system that's still a Debian system and is using
gcc 4.1.1 is fairly low.
I concur that there's something fundamentally broken with the development
environment on that system.
